The Golden Boot is the trophy given to the player with the most goals at the end of the season. This is debatably the most sought after award a player in the BPL can receive. The title has been held by such players as: Michael Owen, Thierry Henry, Didier Drogba, Carlos Tevez, Christiano Ronaldo and Alan Shearer. So it is easy to see why the award is so coveted, to be put into company with such legendary players is enough incentive to drive many a player. Also, as the BPL is seen as one of, if not the most, competitive Premier League in Europe, winning the Golden Boot basically buys you a spot on any team you might want to transfer to. Not to mention endorsements, more lucrative contracts, or any of the other perks that come with being the best goal scorer in Britain.
While it is very early on in the season still, there are definitely some strong candidates for the Golden Boot emerging.
The 29 year-old Argentinian is a striker with excellent ball control, natural striker positioning, and deadly accuracy. In his career with Man City he has proven himself a top class striker scoring over 20 goals in 3 seasons, including a career high of 26 in the 2014/2015 season in which he won the Golden Boot, Aguero is a constant threat to any team he faces. Currently in second with 6 goals in 7 games, Aguero is a name you can expect to be in the running for the Golden Boot every season, and this year is no exception.
The young Belgian striker is currently leading the goal-scoring race at 7 goals in 7 games. Finishing last season with 25 goals and a close 2nd place for the Golden Boot, the 24 year-old has already established himself as one of the best strikers in todays’ game, with still many more years to come. Up front alongside Paul Pogba, under Mourinho’s system, stands to give Lukaku an excellent chance at taking home the Boot. The main roadblock to Lukaku’s efforts will actually be his own team. In the current pairing with Pogba Lukaku has established himself as the 1st option. However, as soon as he is back from injury superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be joining him on the pitch, While this is undoubtedly good news for Manchester United, Ibrahimovic is sure to come in as a potent goal scorer, which then takes away from Lukau’s own opportunities.
Another young striker and favorite for the Boot, is 24 year-old Harry Kane. The Tottenham striker has won the Golden Boot the past 2 years with 29 and 25 goals, and came in 2nd the year before that. He is fast, has a great intelligence for the game, and is able to finish with precision from most anywhere in the attacking third. Another thing that might work in Kane’s favor is the lack of other scoring options at Tottenham. While they are a solid team with many talented players, they do not have many other high-volume scorers, and you can expect to see Harry Kane’s name on the majority of Tottenham’s goals this season.
The young Spaniard rounds out our group. With 6 goals in his first 7 Premier League games for Chelsea, Morata seems to have had no trouble finding his role in this talented Chelsea squad. While his real prolific goal scoring so far has been on the national stage, Morata will surely be a top contender for the Boot. Even with his young age he has already played for Juventus and Real Madrid, 2 of the biggest clubs in their respective countries. After being in Ronaldo’s shadow at Real, the young striker has come to Chelsea to make a name for himself, and to establish his position as one of the top strikers in the world. With a deft touch and a natural gal scoring mind, Morata is sure to cause troubles for defenses all year, and perhaps as the next Chelsea star.
While it is too early to decide a winner, this year’s competition will surely be a fierce one. Be sure to check in throughout the season for updates and re-evaluations. As a Liverpool fan I’m just waiting for Coutinho to get back in to form and take the Boot for himself. As an impartial writer, im gonna have to give it to Aguero. I think there are many players who stand a chance at winning, but Aguero has experience, incredible ball control, and some of the best scoring ability the BPL has ever seen. That, along with his talented support staff at Manchester City, is more than enough reason to consider him as the number one contender.
